COVID 19 – What remote working means for your income tax return
Share this article:
Now’s the time for workers to add one five-minute task to your daily routine: Bookkeeping.
As more of you are adjusting to working from home, here is a friendly reminder to track your expenses before tax time. If you’re incurring any expenses as a result of working from home and you’re not being reimbursed for those expenses by your employer, then you should be able to claim a tax deduction for those costs.
So, what & how can you claim?
Deductions include the work-related portion of running expenses at home, such as lighting, cleaning, heating and cooling, as well as phone and internet – there must be a clear nexus between the expenses and earning your income.
You will need to have paid for these costs (and not have been reimbursed) and have records to support your claims.
Generally, you can’t claim deductions for rent, mortgage insurance, property insurance or rates, unless your home office is your usual place of business.
The ATO says – “An employee’s home office will not be a place of business if they are working there temporarily as a result of COVID-19,”.
Household costs you can claim:
– Heating, cooling and lighting bills
– Costs of cleaning your home working area
– Depreciation of home office furniture and fittings & office equipment and computers
– Costs of repairing home office equipment, furniture and furnishings
– Small capital items such as furniture and computer equipment costing less than $300 can be written off in full immediately (they don’t need to be depreciated)
– Computer consumables (like printer ink) and stationery
– Phone (mobile and/or landline) and internet expenses
• Claim Option 1 – Diary method
The diary method is used to work out how much of your household running expenses relates to doing work in your home office. The diary needs to detail the time you spend in the home office compared with other people who use the home office. You should keep a diary record for a representative four-week period. It is important to keep a separate diary for the period of your “corona-induced” home working to justify the larger claim over this period – and don’t try to apply this larger work-related proportion to the whole year!
• Claim Option 2 – ATO rate per hour method
The ATO rate per hour method is where you use a fixed rate of 52 cents per hour for home office expenses like heating, cooling, lighting and the decline in value of furniture instead of keeping details of actual costs. You just need to keep a record of the number of hours you use the home office and multiply that by 52 cents (0.52). In addition to claiming 52 cents per hour, you can also make a separate claim for phone and internet expenses, computer consumables and stationery, and the depreciation of computers or other equipment.
This information sheet is intended as a guide as per ATO advice. All actual detail and circumstances differ, please discuss your situation with one of our staff members.
